Why We Left Fenugreek Out

Why We Left Fenugreek Out

Open almost any lactation supplement and fenugreek is the first thing on the label. It is the default ingredient in the category, and it has been for decades. We left it out on purpose.

Why it became the default

Fenugreek is cheap, it has a long traditional history around feeding, and it is easy to source in bulk. Once a few brands built around it, everyone else followed. Being standard is not the same as being the best option, and in this case the two came apart a long time ago.

The problem mothers actually report

  • Stomach upset, cramping and gas, in the mother and sometimes in the baby
  • A strong maple smell that comes through in sweat and urine
  • Doses that have to be pushed high before anything is noticed at all
  • Mothers with thyroid or blood sugar conditions being told to avoid it entirely

For a product you take every day while feeding a newborn, a gut that is unhappy is not a small cost.

What we used instead

Four plants, all with a long history around feeding, chosen because they are gentler to live with day after day.

  • Moringa. Dense in vitamins and minerals, and traditionally used by feeding mothers across South Asia and East Africa.
  • Milk thistle. Long associated with feeding support, and easy on the stomach at a sensible dose.
  • Fennel. Used for generations around digestion and feeding, in mothers and in babies.
  • Blessed thistle. Often paired with milk thistle in traditional preparations.

Why that combination

Two reasons, and neither of them is marketing.

The first is tolerance. A supplement only works if you keep taking it. Anything that makes you feel worse in week one gets abandoned in week two, and then it does nothing at all.

The second is that these four are easier to dose honestly. Fenugreek tends to get pushed to levels that cause the side effects above before anything is noticed. We would rather be in a range mothers can actually stay in.

The honest version

Leaving fenugreek out does not make a supplement work better by itself. It makes it easier to take every day, and taking it every day is the part that matters.
